Lawrence Flynn made this watercolour painting of a Hitchcock Rocker; you can see his signature there in the bottom right corner. I’m immediately drawn to how deliberately crafted this chair is. Imagine the artist’s care in depicting each element: the smooth, curved armrests, the delicate spindles of the back, and the gentle arc of the rockers themselves. There’s a real appreciation here for the chair’s design, and the craftsmanship that goes into making one. I bet Flynn was thinking about the way the light plays across the surfaces, and how the dark wood creates contrast. It's a subtle thing, but you can see the care that went into rendering the details and decorative flourishes. It reminds me a bit of those Shaker drawings. There's something so human and inviting about a rocking chair. I'm sure Flynn would agree.
