Agnes Slott-Møller made this pencil drawing, Studier af kvindedragt og dragtspænder, which translates as Studies of women's clothing and buckles. We find it today at the Statens Museum for Kunst. Looking at the techniques of the sketch, we can see how Slott-Møller explores historical styles. She was working at a time when cultural institutions, such as museums, were trying to promote a sense of shared national identity through the Middle Ages. Slott-Møller’s drawing gives us some insight into the social role of female artists at the time. Were they limited to particular subjects like costume, or was this of particular interest to them? By studying this sketch, along with other drawings and paintings by Slott-Møller, as well as museum archives and publications, we can begin to understand the social conditions that shaped her artistic production.
