Magdalene by Natale Schiavoni

Magdalene c. 19th century

Editor: So, this is "Magdalene" by Natale Schiavoni. It's a print, and immediately strikes me as intensely mournful. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Ah, yes, Mary Magdalene, gazing heavenward. The skull and open book speak of repentance and contemplation of mortality, quite dramatically I might add. Note the vial? Perhaps alluding to her anointing of Jesus. Do you feel the tension between earthly suffering and spiritual hope? Editor: Absolutely, the skull really brings that home. What's your take on the landscape in the background? Curator: Interesting that you ask; it’s a romanticized wilderness, a space for spiritual transformation, don’t you think? Overall, it’s a powerful image of faith and redemption. Editor: Definitely gives me a lot to consider about how artists portray such complex themes!
