This untitled piece by Verena Loewensberg is about color relationships and the possibilities of graphic form. Loewensberg plays with the cool, flat surface of the paint to create a sense of seamlessness, as if the colors have always been there. The bands of color create a rainbow that's both familiar and strange, a bit off-kilter. The white space in the center feels like a void, a space for contemplation, but also a space that's activated by the energy of the surrounding colors. She reminds me of Hilma af Klint, another artist who was exploring the spiritual dimensions of abstraction. But where af Klint's work is often dense and mystical, Loewensberg's is light and airy, almost playful. It's a reminder that art doesn't have to be heavy or serious to be profound.
