Untitled (girl standing on balustrade, being photographed) c. 1950
Dimensions 7.62 x 10.16 cm (3 x 4 in.)
Curator: Looking at this small, undated photograph by Lucian and Mary Brown, titled "Untitled (girl standing on balustrade, being photographed)," I am struck by the otherworldly feeling it evokes. Editor: Yes, the high contrast really gives it a dreamlike quality. It's as if the image has been burned into our memory. There's something poignant about the girl’s isolation on the balustrade, too. Curator: The act of photographing, especially children, was often about control and documentation. The balustrade serves as a stage, the women around her cast as an audience. Editor: Or maybe it is the photographer's attempt to freeze time. To capture this fleeting moment of childhood innocence before it vanishes like smoke. But I like how the child's back is turned to the camera, almost defiant. Curator: True, there's a push and pull in the image between the social structures and the child's own interior world. It leaves me pondering the dynamics of family and representation, especially in the context of historical photography. Editor: I love how it’s both simple and incredibly complex. The Browns captured more than just a moment, they captured a feeling. It’s stayed with me.
