Editor: This is Terry Winters' "Field Note (17)," from the Tate Collections, a black and white image that looks like a strange, dark vessel. It's so abstract. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I see Winters engaging with the very process of mark-making. Consider the layering, the way the ink bleeds. It highlights the physicality of the medium itself. How does the artist's hand become evident in this particular work? Editor: I guess I didn’t really think about the ink itself as being important. Curator: Indeed. The drips, the density, it all speaks to a deliberate exploration of materials, wouldn't you agree? Editor: Yes, I see that now. The focus on the process and material really changes how I view abstract art.
