Johannes Tavenraat made this pen and ink drawing, “Ruiters, paard en figuurstudies,” or “Riders, horse and figure studies,” in 1846. This sketch offers us a window into the visual culture of the Netherlands in the mid-19th century, a period marked by social and political change. Tavenraat's choice of subject matter, depicting riders and figures, reflects the prevailing interest in military themes and the everyday life of the Dutch population. We see the ways the military was viewed and civilians occupying the same space. The loose, informal style of the drawing also speaks to the changing artistic conventions of the time. By examining Tavenraat's drawings, along with other historical documents, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the social conditions that shaped artistic production in 19th-century Netherlands and the role of art in reflecting and challenging existing social norms.
