Curator: This is "2. Chase" by Colin Lanceley, part of the Tate Collections; a visual puzzle rendered with collage and printmaking. It measures about 775 by 563 millimetres. Editor: Immediately, I see a tension here – mechanical, almost alien forms juxtaposed with softer, more playful puzzle pieces. There's a sense of disjointed narratives competing for space. Curator: The mechanical forms, echoing perhaps early aviation or engine diagrams, are a key motif. They speak to Lanceley's ongoing fascination with technology and its impact. Editor: And those puzzle pieces? Scattered, incomplete. They feel emblematic of fragmented identities, struggles to reconcile with dominant narratives. The image is dated 1966 and strikes me with its modernity, which feels very contemporary. Curator: I read them as pieces of a larger, perhaps unattainable, whole. The “chase” in the title suggests a pursuit, a search for connection within these disparate elements. Editor: I think it is interesting to see the image as an abstract piece with no deeper meaning and to embrace it as such. Curator: It alludes to the complex, often paradoxical nature of the chase itself. Editor: A very insightful take, I may stand corrected!
