Koloman Moser made this design for the left side wall of the Holy Spirit Church in Düsseldorf, but we don’t know exactly when or with what materials. What strikes me is its formality, the intricate geometric patterns and the muted colour palette. It's like a blueprint, yet it feels so alive! Look closely, and you’ll notice the meticulous detailing, how each arch and window is framed by these delicate, repeating motifs. It gives a sense of depth, almost like looking through a kaleidoscope. But what I find particularly fascinating is the contrast between the precision of the architectural elements and the more fluid, gestural figures within the arches. It's a delicate balance, like a dance between order and chaos. Moser was a contemporary of Gustav Klimt, and you can see some shared sensibilities in their work. They both had a knack for ornamentation. But while Klimt's paintings are often opulent and sensual, Moser's design feels more restrained, more spiritual. It's a testament to the endless possibilities of art.
