Editor: So, here we have "Boer en pijprokende man," or "Farmer and Pipe-Smoking Man," made sometime between 1793 and 1835 by François Joseph Pfeiffer. It's a pen and ink sketch. I'm immediately drawn to the loose lines and almost caricature-like figures. They have so much personality, even in this small format. What strikes you when you look at this piece? Curator: Ah, this little gem! It’s like stumbling upon a whispered secret in a bustling gallery. What strikes me is how much *life* Pfeiffer manages to imbue with so few strokes. Look at the slouch of the seated figure, the way the other stares upwards...almost as if contemplating existence itself, wouldn't you agree?
