Jessica Price rendered this Red Earthenware Pitcher with what looks like watercolor on paper, but it's a painting about pottery, so we already have layers of remove. Price makes it about the marks! The surface is a dance of translucent layers, allowing the light to bounce and play. There is no attempt to conceal the brushwork. You can see these beautiful, loose washes that blend maroon, red, and sienna to create a sense of depth. The pitcher is both simple and complex, functional, yet decorative. Look at the way she's captured the light reflecting off the glazed surface, this lovely detail makes the object feel alive and dynamic. It reminds me of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings, where everyday objects become monumental through careful observation and subtle variations of tone. It’s a meditation on form, light, and shadow, as much as it is a depiction of a humble pitcher.
