Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller painted this view of Lake Altaussee and the Dachstein in Austria to capture the landscape and convey its sublimity. Waldmüller was deeply invested in representing nature in its truest form. During the 19th century, landscape painting offered a space to express national identity and cultural values, often romanticizing rural life and the natural world. Waldmüller's detailed realism sought to capture a pure, unadulterated version of the Austrian landscape, resonating with a longing for stability and tradition during a time of significant social change. While seemingly apolitical, such landscapes affirmed a particular vision of Austrian identity, one that often overlooked the experiences of marginalized communities. Despite these exclusions, Waldmüller’s landscapes are incredibly emotional, offering viewers an opportunity to reflect on their own place within the natural world and the complex layers of history embedded within it.
