Max Weber made this lithograph, 'Barrére Wind Orchestra,' using crayon, ink, and paper. It's a moody piece, and the image seems to emerge out of darkness. I can imagine Weber drawing quickly, almost as if he were trying to capture the fleeting essence of a live performance. See how the marks around the musicians create an atmosphere of swirling energy, like the sound waves of the music itself? The heaviness of the crayon gives the piece a tactile quality, as if you could reach out and feel the rough texture of the paper and the density of the ink. Painters and printmakers are in an ongoing conversation. They’re responding to and riffing off each other’s ideas across time. For me, it’s an embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple readings. Like a good piece of music, it’s open to interpretation.
