Jacob Matham created this engraving, Luiheid, also known as Acedia, around the turn of the 17th century. It presents a detailed study in contrasting textures and tones, achieved solely through line work. The composition is dominated by the languid figure of Acedia, juxtaposed against a cloudy sky, mountainous terrain, and a resting donkey. Matham uses line to delineate form and shadow. Notice how he varies the density and direction of the lines to create depth and texture, contrasting the smoothness of the skin with the rough fur of the donkey and the flowing drapery. The light falls unevenly, heightening the contrast between the detailed foreground and the more sketch-like background. Acedia, holding a snail, is portrayed with an almost sculptural quality, a figure of inertia. The donkey, usually a beast of burden, resting, reinforces the theme of idleness. This engraving functions as a moral allegory, using classical form to critique a lapse in moral vigor, inviting reflection on diligence and indolence.
