Willem Pothast made this landscape with a man and three horses using a kind of drypoint or etching, and it's just gorgeous. It's all about the mark-making here; the image comes together bit by bit. I love how Pothast builds up the scene with these tiny, close lines. Look at the way the moonlight filters through the sky, it's almost tangible. And the landscape in the background, it is barely there, but the marks are so precise. The whole thing feels like a memory. It reminds me of some of Rodolphe Bresdin's prints. A similar sense of detail and a feeling of another world. It’s not about perfection, but about the feeling and the process. Art is a conversation, right?
