Vangel Naumovski created this painting, Spiral Galaxy, with oil on canvas. Look at how the forms seem to emerge from the background, built up with layer upon layer of thin, translucent washes of color. This approach to painting allows the process of creation to be visible, as if we’re watching the artwork come into being. The colors are earthy but also otherworldly, like a landscape from a dream. The texture is smooth, the surface carefully worked, creating a sense of depth and luminosity. Notice the thin lines like delicate threads that connect the different elements, binding the composition together. These lines almost act as pathways or connections within the landscape. Naumovski reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint. Both artists created their own personal cosmologies, a language of form and color to map out the complexities of inner and outer space. It’s not about answers, but about embracing the questions and the ambiguity.
