Robert Frank's photographic work, "Convention 24," is this amazing matrix of light and shadow, capturing moments, gestures, and moods like fleeting thoughts. It's not just what he photographs but how he strings these moments together that makes it so compelling. There's this raw, grainy texture throughout. The high contrast renders the images visceral and immediate, like a punch in the gut. Look at the flags scattered through the images. They are everywhere, symbols of patriotism, waving, but cropped, and distorted, taking on a strange, almost sinister undertone in their repetition. Each frame is a snapshot of a larger narrative, but as a whole, Frank's work asks us to consider what is not shown in these images. It reminds me a lot of what the painter Gerhard Richter was up to around the same time, using blurry and out-of-focus photographs to generate ambiguity and ambivalence. It makes you question the meaning of representation itself. Is photography fact or fiction? Frank doesn’t give us easy answers, and that's what makes his art so alive.
