This -Sweet Thrift- mechanical bank was made by Stollwerk, and it’s a charming little object, really. The bright, sunshine-yellow color palette grabs your attention right away. It gives off a sense of playfulness, like building blocks or an old toy. Looking closely, you can see the surface has this aged, almost worn texture. It feels like it’s been handled and used, which gives it a kind of life. The flowers and figures aren’t trying to be realistic. The illustration shows a delightful kind of directness and honesty. I love the "bull drawer" label with the cute rose details, that shows a playful, childlike perspective. Thinking about it, this piece reminds me of the work of Red Grooms, who also used vibrant colors and flattened perspectives. Like his work, it makes you smile, and it leaves you with this sense of joyful spontaneity.
