This photograph, Landschap met waterpartij en vier berken, was made by Max Lorenz at an unknown date. It's hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the water, the reflections make it a bit like looking into another world! The way the trees stand so tall, and the horizontal emphasis of the water and clouds, creates a sense of balance between vertical and horizontal forces. There's such a range of greys and blacks, and the way the light catches the water. I love how you can see the texture of the clouds, it’s so palpable, and kind of dominates the space. This reminds me a little of Gerhard Richter’s landscapes; in both artists’ works, we find this tension between the real and the represented, creating a space for the imagination to roam. Anyway, enough from me. What do you think?
