Gompers captured these two photos of Princess Beatrix as a toddler with a dog in the snow, sometime around 1939, judging by the inscription. There's such a stark contrast in tones, from the pristine white snow to the deep shadows of the trees, it really evokes a wintery atmosphere. In the top photo, Beatrix and her big, droopy friend are so close together, like they're sharing a secret. The dog seems enormous, almost protective. The lower image has so much charm; Beatrix being pulled in a cart, with the dog loyally plodding along. The blurriness of the background gives you a feeling of movement, like we're there with them, crunching through the snow. Gompers' work has the snapshot quality of Nan Goldin, but with the formal restraint of someone like Gerhard Richter. I love it! It reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful art is about capturing a moment in time, rather than striving for perfection.
