These photographs of Princess Beatrix as a toddler, accompanied by a Saint Bernard, were composed by Gompers sometime around February 1939 in Grindlewald. I think of the act of photography itself. The light shifting, the positioning, the adjustments, the clicking. How, over time, an image emerges through trial, error, intuition. It's fascinating to think about Gompers, and what it must have been like to take these photographs. What was he thinking? I feel the weight of those older cameras. The challenge of composing in winter light, with a child and a dog as subjects. There’s a delicate balance, a tension between capturing a fleeting moment and creating a timeless image. Photography has an interesting relationship with painting, an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity. And I suppose both embrace ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
