Mylène van Heijster, born in 1965, created this Dubbeltje voor collier van vijftig dubbeltjes verbonden door zilverdraad, but the date of its creation is not currently known. There's something deeply satisfying about taking the mundane – like a 10 cent coin – and transforming it through repetition and connection. It reminds me of Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings, where simple instructions lead to complex, emergent forms. Each coin, with its embossed details and worn surface, carries a history of transactions, a trace of countless hands. The idea of stringing fifty of these together with silver wire… that's where the magic happens. It shifts from currency to adornment, from the functional to the precious. It’s like turning a collection of discarded thoughts into a poem. And like poetry, the final form emerges from the accumulation of individual gestures, bound together by a delicate, shimmering thread. It makes you consider the value we place on things, both monetary and emotional.
