Paul Jacoulet made this print, Fleurs De Soir Truck - Toloas, sometime in the mid-twentieth century. Isn't it lovely? I imagine Jacoulet, layering colour upon colour to build this serene scene. It's all very delicate but look at how the composition is built, and the shapes contrasted. The delicate web in the background really offsets the heavy and opulent flowers on the left. I’m picturing the artist carefully selecting each hue, maybe mixing them himself, deciding just how much pink, how much mauve to build this woman’s dress. And those tiny flowers! I wonder how long it took to make this. It's a really charming piece, so intimate. It reminds me a little bit of Matisse, with a sort of Japonisme thrown in. There is a wonderful conversation happening between artists across time here. There's an ongoing back-and-forth, an exchange of ideas, each artist inspiring the next. It is a reminder that art is never truly finished, but rather an evolving dialogue across generations.
