Curatorial notes
August Macke painted this dreamy “Rocky Landscape” in watercolor, and it's like he's not just showing us a place, but a feeling. The way he layers the colors, one over the other, makes me think he's building the image bit by bit, the same way a painter builds up a painting over time. Looking at the mountain, see how it’s made of these angular shapes? Macke lays down each little brushstroke almost like a mosaic. The paint isn’t trying to hide itself; it's thin, watery, and pools at the edges of each shape, so you see how the image is constructed. There’s a looseness to it all that's really beautiful. It reminds me of Cezanne who was also interested in seeing the world as geometric shapes. What Macke gives us here isn't just a picture, it's an invitation to see the world around us with new eyes. And that’s what art’s all about, right?
