This is page 43 from a register of students at the Colonial School for Girls and Women in The Hague, made sometime between 1930 and 1949. The anonymous hand has carefully ruled the lines of the ledger, each entry a mini-portrait of someone's life. I’m drawn to the way the ink sits on the page, some entries dark and bold, others lighter, almost faded, like memories. The handwriting itself varies from a precise, formal script to a more casual scrawl, hinting at the personalities behind each name. See how the signatures flow, each a unique gesture? It’s like a dance across the page. The photographs, too, are fascinating. Some are formal portraits, while others are more candid, offering a glimpse into the lives of these women. It reminds me of other artists who worked with found images, like Gerhard Richter. But here, the found images are deeply personal, embedded in the fabric of the school's history. It’s a quiet piece, but it speaks volumes about memory, identity, and the passage of time.
