Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a grand piano, date unknown, probably with pencil on paper. It's just lines and numbers, but it’s so evocative, right? It’s a quick sketch, like a thought bubble, and you can almost hear the music just from these simple lines. The pressure of the pencil varies, giving some lines more weight than others. Look at the soft curves suggesting the body of the piano, they feel so sensual. The hard edges and corners on the other hand, have a completely different tone. These kind of drawings, these early sketches, are so cool because they give us a glimpse into the artist's mind, their process. It reminds me a little of Twombly, in the sense of trying to capture a feeling with minimal effort. It is about the joy of trying to work something out on paper, isn't it?
