Charlotte Winter created this printed cotton textile, featuring little red sailboats and anchors, sometime in the 20th century. It's so sweet and simple, you know? The whole thing looks like it was built up in layers, a process of applying one shape over another, the red stripes laid down first, and then the anchors and ships. The red isn't just red, it's got a life of its own, kinda thin and watery in places, pooling in others, like watercolour bleeding into fabric. The whole thing feels so tactile. And, oh, those tiny sailboats! Each one is like a little world unto itself, with its own quirks and wobbles, each slightly different. It reminds me of the work of someone like Ree Morton, but with a lot more repetition. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is about process, about the journey of making, rather than a fixed destination.
