Ralph Goings made this painting of a diner, probably in the seventies, and in oil paint. The whole scene is bathed in this cool, slightly melancholic light, which gives it a cinematic feel, like a still from a movie. The paint is applied so smoothly it almost disappears, which I think is a really interesting choice. When you look closely at the counter, you can see how he's built up these layers of translucent color to create the glossy surface. It's amazing how he's captured the way light reflects off of chrome and tile. Look at that cluster of bottles, boxes and containers stacked behind the counter, each object rendered with such meticulous detail. The way he's painted the reflections in the countertop gives the image a surreal quality. It makes me think a little of Edward Hopper, but with a Pop Art sensibility. There’s a sense of loneliness, but also an embrace of everyday life. It’s like Goings is saying that even the most ordinary places can be beautiful, if you really take the time to look.
