Jean Jacques de Boissieu created this ‘Study of Eight Heads’ using etching. The artist was a Swiss draughtsman and printmaker, working during the 18th century, a time when the Enlightenment ideals were spreading across Europe. The focus on reason and observation influenced the way artists approached their subjects. De Boissieu's detailed study reflects this era of empirical investigation, yet it also hints at something more profound. The faces, etched with fine lines, capture a range of emotions and ages, and invite a dialogue between art history and contemporary theory. Do these faces represent the social hierarchy of the time, or is Boissieu inviting us to look beyond class and status? What do these faces tell us about the experiences and beliefs of people who are often overlooked in historical narratives? This piece prompts us to consider how we, too, observe and interpret the faces around us, inviting us to reflect on the shared human experiences that transcend time.
