Numa created this lithograph titled 'Phenomene vivant' sometime in the 1800s. The eye is drawn to the woman in the floral dress, adorned with roses and foliage, symbols of beauty and vitality, set against the backdrop of an elegant gathering. The rose, historically, represents love, and the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. We see this mirrored across cultures from the ancient Greeks, associating the rose with Aphrodite, to its presence in Christian iconography. Notice also how the foliage around the woman's chest recalls classical depictions of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. This connection transcends time, yet the context shifts; here, the woman becomes an object of spectacle, a "living phenomenon," viewed with a gaze that carries both admiration and perhaps a touch of bewilderment. The image captures a moment of social interaction, and perhaps, hints at the complex dance between nature and society, appearance and reality, engaging our collective memories, and provoking us to reflect on how we perceive and interpret the world around us.
