Nicolò della Casa created this print, "The Last Judgement," sometime in the 16th century. It's a dense composition, dominated by muscular figures arranged in a dynamic, almost turbulent configuration of clouds. The figures, some blowing long trumpets, are rendered with a strong emphasis on their physicality. The composition is intriguing. The figures seem to float without a clear sense of space. Casa uses line and form to create a sense of depth, but the overall effect is one of a flattened picture plane, pushing the figures towards us. This flattening can be seen as a challenge to traditional Renaissance perspective, creating a new way of thinking about space in art. This print destabilizes traditional notions of the Last Judgement. Instead of divine order, we see a scene of almost chaotic energy.
