Nicolò della Casa created this print, "The Last Judgement," sometime in the 16th century. It's a dense composition, dominated by muscular figures arranged in a dynamic, almost turbulent configuration of clouds. The figures, some blowing long trumpets, are rendered with a strong emphasis on their physicality. The composition is intriguing. The figures seem to float without a clear sense of space. Casa uses line and form to create a sense of depth, but the overall effect is one of a flattened picture plane, pushing the figures towards us. This flattening can be seen as a challenge to traditional Renaissance perspective, creating a new way of thinking about space in art. This print destabilizes traditional notions of the Last Judgement. Instead of divine order, we see a scene of almost chaotic energy. Through line and the robust forms of the figures, Casa invites us to reconsider the structures of religious representation. This artwork continues to challenge our perceptions and expectations.
