Luca Giordano made this drawing of an Evangelist looking upward sometime in the 17th or 18th century, using red chalk on paper. Giordano was known for his speed and fluency of hand, and you can see that here, in the confident lines of the drapery and figure. Red chalk, also known as sanguine, was a favorite medium of old master draftsmen. It allowed for subtle gradations of tone depending on the pressure applied. The quality of the paper also contributes to the drawing's effect. Its texture grabs the chalk, creating a slightly rough, vibrant surface. Drawings like this were often made in preparation for larger paintings, giving Giordano the opportunity to work through his ideas in a quick, economical way. The immediacy of the medium allows us to feel close to the artist, witnessing his creative process firsthand. It reminds us that even the grandest artistic visions are built on foundations of humble materials, skillful labor, and careful planning.
