This etching, titled *Herder met kudde en vier muzen*, was produced by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich in the 18th century. Dietrich worked in the courts of Dresden, where he was also director of the art academy. The image shows a shepherd with his flock in an idealized pastoral setting. He is accompanied by four muses, goddesses who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. The shepherd seems at ease in the presence of allegorical figures who symbolize the cultural value of art and literature, which elevates his status. This interest in the elevation of ordinary people was very much in vogue in the 1700s and was expressed through art and literature. To understand how this art was reflective of its own time, we can look to period literature, popular culture, and political movements. By researching these resources, we gain insight into the social conditions that shaped this artistic production. The meaning of art is always contingent on its social and institutional context.
