Jacob Lipkin made this drawing of a Pa. German Hound’s Band from Conestoga Wagon, but we don’t know exactly when. I love these kinds of technical drawings. It's all very diagrammatic, with a simple palette, and it makes me imagine Lipkin hunched over the paper, carefully measuring and copying what he saw. The evenness of the lines is so descriptive. You can almost feel the texture of the different materials, the smooth metal of the iron bands, the rougher wood of the wagon tongue. Lipkin’s process feels so methodical, like he’s trying to understand the mechanics and the joinery. He’s trying to create a clear and accurate depiction of the object, and there's something so pure about that intention. It reminds me of other artists who use technical drawing as a form of art, like Hilla and Bernd Becher, who photographed industrial structures, or even Leonardo da Vinci, with his anatomical drawings. It’s all part of this bigger conversation about how we see and represent the world, each artist adding their own voice and vision.
