Jaroslav Keluc’s ‘Small Church Brodek U Konice’ is a painting of memory, filtered through feeling, and made with humble materials and muted hues. Imagine Keluc layering the paint, almost dry-brushing in places, to conjure this small, snowy village. The painting feels like an act of both looking and remembering. I think Keluc was trying to capture not just the scene, but a feeling of warmth, a flicker of something still living under the snow, against the wintery landscape. The little red figure walking towards the church adds a touch of mystery. Who is this person? The way Keluc lets the colors bleed and blend, the ochres, creams, and browns, makes me think of the paintings of Vilhelm Hammershøi, who also saw the sacred in quiet, everyday spaces. It's like he’s saying, “Look, even here, in the bareness of winter, there is still beauty.” And for me, that's a kind of devotional act.
