Philipp Otto Runge made this delicate drawing, "Kopfstudie der Sophia Sieveking," using pencil on paper. Runge, living in a time when women’s roles were largely confined to the domestic sphere, offers us a glimpse into the life of Sophia Sieveking. Her gaze is cast downwards, her expression subtle. What was the nature of their relationship? Was she a friend, a family member, or simply a model? The Romantic era saw the rise of portraiture which focused on the subject's inner emotional life. Runge’s work taps into this sensibility, inviting us to contemplate Sophia’s interiority. But it also prompts us to reflect on the power dynamics inherent in portraiture, where the artist captures and interprets the subject, often through a particular lens. Runge captures a moment of quiet reflection, perhaps inviting us to consider the untold stories and silenced voices of women in history.
