Editor: This is a pen and ink drawing of animal heads by Abraham Cooper. It’s a study sheet, and I’m struck by how each animal seems to embody a different aspect of character. What symbols do you see here? Curator: Well, think about it: in Cooper’s time, the horse, often bridled as we see here, symbolized harnessed power and nobility. The donkey, traditionally associated with humility or stubbornness. What do these animals evoke for you when seen together? Editor: I see the farm, of course, but also, a hierarchy of labor and value, maybe even a social commentary on rural life. Curator: Precisely. These seemingly simple animal studies become potent symbols, reflecting societal structures and values. The artist uses cultural shorthand to create an impression. Editor: I’ve never thought of animal studies in this way before. Thanks! Curator: A fresh perspective is always welcome.
