This print was made by Johan Noman, using engraving, sometime before his death in 1833. Engraving involves cutting lines into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then wiping it clean so that ink remains only in the incised lines. The plate is then pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Look closely, and you can see the crisp, precise lines that define the scene: a chaotic depiction of a bull attacking people, with a figure on horseback looming above. The choice of engraving is significant. It was a relatively reproducible technique, allowing for the widespread dissemination of images. This speaks to the print’s likely function as a form of popular media, perhaps a commentary on social unrest or the dangers of the natural world. The floral border softens the image, and yet it is clear that a lot of work went into the production process. Considering the materials and labor involved, we can appreciate how this print bridges the gap between fine art and the everyday concerns of its time.
