Curatorial notes

Editor: This is a silver tetradrachm, a coin, of Lysimachos of Thrace. The detail is amazing, even though it's so small! What strikes you about the composition of this piece? Curator: Formally, I am drawn to the use of relief. Note how the sculptor employs varying depths to create a sense of volume and separation within such a limited space. The texture, too, is compelling; the smoothness of the face contrasting with the intricate curls of the hair. Editor: So, it’s the contrast between the textures and the varying depths that really stand out? Curator: Precisely. The coin is a testament to the power of formal elements to create compelling imagery, irrespective of scale. Editor: I never thought about analyzing a coin this way. Thanks!
