'Herinnering aan het Lago Maggiore' was created by Camille Corot, but the date is unknown. It's a print using etching technique. Corot made many landscape paintings in his career and, like his contemporaries in 19th century France, he was interested in the social role of the art. He painted the landscape in the classical tradition as a site of leisure and reflection. But his paintings were also of his time, and they show an awareness of the changing social conditions that were transforming the French countryside. Corot's choice of subject matter, such as this Italian landscape, reflects his own cultural background and the values of the French bourgeoisie. The growth of tourism and leisure travel made Italy a popular destination for artists and writers of the time. By looking into the travel guides and guidebooks of the time, as well as other landscape painting of this era, we can better understand the cultural significance of Corot's work.
