This is Michel Lasne’s portrait of Pierre Seguier, made with engraving. Seguier lived through a tumultuous period of religious and political conflict in France and rose to become one of the most powerful figures in the court of Louis XIII. Note the formality of the composition, typical of official portraiture. The Latin inscription below the image emphasizes Seguier's titles and status, linking him to the monarchy and the church. These details tell us about the social hierarchies of the time, where identity and power were closely tied to class and religious affiliation. Lasne’s portrait creates a carefully constructed image of power and authority. Yet, I can’t help but wonder about the personal cost to Seguier, who was instrumental in suppressing dissent, and whether that comes through in his eyes. Does the image capture a man of faith or a man of power?
