This delicate drawing of a card table was made by Henry Meyers, though we don’t know when. What I find so interesting here is how the line, so simple, creates a whole world. Look at how the marks hover on the page, as if the table could lift off! The drafting lines with their precise, measured dimensions are like a secret language – they’re not just describing an object but mapping out possibilities. The evenness of the lines and the lack of shading almost flatten the three-dimensional object, but the semi-circular form of the top of the table still feels like it’s gently curving, inviting you to lean in. It reminds me a bit of some of Agnes Martin’s drawings, with their quiet, meditative geometry. Ultimately, the drawing is as much about the idea of a table as it is about the table itself. It’s a testament to the power of simplicity and the magic that can happen when you let a single line do all the talking.
