Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made this woodcut called The Gull Hunter. I wonder what it was like to take a chisel to a block of wood? I imagine the focus, the concentration, as he cuts away at the surface. The stark contrast between black and white creates a really edgy feeling here. I’m drawn to the shapes, these bold, angular forms that make up the hunter and his surroundings. It’s like a dance of light and shadow. What was Kirchner trying to capture? Was he interested in the act of hunting itself? Or maybe he was trying to convey something deeper about human nature and our relationship to the environment. I like how the figure is both strong and vulnerable, sitting in a space that’s both enclosed and open. All these artists, like Kirchner, are in dialogue with each other, responding to the world around them and to the art that came before. The painting becomes a place where different meanings can emerge, inviting us to bring our own experiences.
