This is Gezicht op Nijmegen, made with pen in grey, in 1672 by the brothers Moreau. I love how the piece is rendered almost entirely in grayscale, like a faded memory or a scene from a dream. The delicate lines and the subtle washes create a sense of depth, but there's also a flatness, a kind of quiet stillness about the whole thing. You can see the physicality of the pen strokes, the way they build up to create form and texture. There's this one area, right in the foreground, where the land curves into the water, it’s almost like a question mark, inviting you to step into the scene and explore. Thinking about artists, there’s something that calls to mind the quiet, contemplative landscapes of Agnes Martin. It reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation, a way of seeing and thinking that evolves over time. It embraces ambiguity and doesn't try to provide definitive answers.
