Editor: This photograph by Martin Schweig, titled "Untitled (couple cutting the cake)," shows a couple at their wedding reception. The cake is enormous! What social commentary do you think Schweig is making here? Curator: Well, the excess is hard to ignore, isn't it? Consider the context of post-war America. Is this a celebration of newfound prosperity, or a critique of burgeoning consumerism and the societal expectations placed on women through marriage? Editor: That’s an interesting point. It's definitely food for thought! Curator: Absolutely! It prompts us to consider whose dreams are being celebrated and at what cost, doesn't it? It's also worth thinking about how gender and class are being performed in this moment of ritual.
