About this artwork

Curator: We're looking at Giacomo Lauro's "The Temple of Juno on the Aventine," a print with no established date. I'm struck by the severe linearity of the engraving, and wonder about its purpose. Editor: The architectural rendering is very precise. It gives me the sense of a very stoic and balanced design. What strikes you most about the composition and how do you interpret it? Curator: The rigid symmetry and sharp lines dictate the visual experience. Note how the columns dictate the proportional relationship between the base and the temple. Do you see how it guides the gaze? Editor: Absolutely, and the repetition of the statues adds a rhythm. It’s a very controlled aesthetic. Curator: Indeed, it's a testament to the power of form and structure. Editor: It is amazing to consider the importance of lines and shape. Curator: And that by examining the artwork closely, a whole story could be constructed.
