This engraving, “Paar met hond,” shows a couple with a dog surrounded by foliage; it was etched by an anonymous artist. Note the verdant, swirling foliage enveloping the figures. Such motifs hearken back to the classical concept of the locus amoenus, the idyllic, sheltered space, often depicted in Roman frescoes. This symbol of natural abundance has, over time, become associated with notions of paradise, love, and fertility. This is seen throughout medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings, each echoing the deep-seated human desire for harmony and connection. The dog, often seen at the couple's feet, symbolizes loyalty and companionship, its presence a silent affirmation of the bond between the pair. Think back to ancient Egyptian art, where animals often embodied specific human traits. This echoes through the ages, reminding us that certain images tap into our shared subconscious, evoking feelings of comfort, trust, and belonging. The dog, as a symbol, evolves and endures, each appearance adding a new layer to its rich history.
