This French settee, “America,” is a rare example of 18th-century furniture celebrating the newly-formed United States. Crafted between 1786 and 1791 by Beauvais, the settee’s upholstery features a tapestry depicting allegorical figures representing the strengths of the new nation. The back panel depicts a scene of triumph, while the seat cushion depicts scenes of peace and abundance. The settee’s elaborate, gilded frame contributes to its overall grandeur and showcases the craftsmanship of the period. “America” is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
