This sheet of studies was made by Jan de Bisschop using pen, brown ink, and brush with brown wash. Here, de Bisschop provides eight renditions of the head of the Venus de' Medici, each offering a different perspective of the famed sculpture. The artist has skillfully manipulated the brown ink to create depth and shadow, accentuating the contours of Venus's face and hair. The softness and warmth of the brown wash lends a sense of classical antiquity to the work, and the slight variations of tone and hue in the wash adds visual interest and complexity to the otherwise uniform composition. While de Bisschop clearly engages with the fine art tradition of classical sculpture, there's a repetitive, almost mechanical quality to the arrangement that nods to the emerging industrial modes of production. It prompts us to reflect on the labor involved in both the original sculpture and the subsequent reproduction, and the complex interplay between art, craft, and industry.
