Anna Catharina Maria van Eeghen made this drawing with pencil, of a path near Groesbeek. It's all about the process, isn't it? Look at those marks, so free and easy, yet controlled. There's a real sense of the artist finding the image as she went along. The texture is key here. See how the pencil creates a kind of soft, almost fuzzy surface? It’s not about precision, but more about capturing the feeling of being in that place. I love the way she handles the light and shadow, building up the darks with layers of pencil, and leaving areas of the paper bare for the highlights. Notice that fallen tree in the foreground, rendered with these quick, confident lines. It really anchors the composition, bringing you into the scene. It reminds me of some of the early landscape drawings of Mondrian. I like to think of these artists as having a conversation across time, each finding their own way to capture the beauty and mystery of the world around them.
