Abraham Delfos created this artwork titled "Tweede slede" using pen and watercolor. The composition is neatly divided into three horizontal sections, from the guards on the left to the sleigh at the center to the horses on the right. Notice how Delfos rendered the guards as if they were Roman soldiers. The artist applied color sparingly, using a pale palette which serves to flatten the figures, eliminating any atmospheric depth. In this period, such artwork was an expression of cultural identity and status. The very precise rendering of the scene, a display of wealth and social position, is organized according to a strict hierarchy. From the horses adorned with rich fabric to the guards, the artist is concerned with creating a visual order, one which speaks to notions of power and social distinction. Although this is an image of people enjoying themselves, it is still rooted in clear codes and social structures. The artwork uses form as a signifier of social standing and cultural values.
